Well, it turns out that the cream-colored kitten with the black face and black ears that I thought was gone is, in fact, here!  I finally saw it come out to eat quite late one evening. I have no clue why we had not seen him prior.  I see him a little bit more often than before but only a little.

Had an interesting experience the other night.  After putting food down, Sweetie Pie’s two kittens came out and started playing – really playing – with me still sitting there. They were chasing each other, attacking, rolling around – having a ball.  We have a kitten toy out there that is tied to string to an arbor thingy.  The toy is one of those mice made of cotton that Bob had soaked in water then rolled  in cat nip, making it rather popular! One kitten would grab it and the other would attack – then they’d run!

I decided to get my camcorder.  Of course, leaving and coming back disrupted the play of the kittens but in moments they were back at it! Back and forth, back and forth, chasing and attacking.  Then I realized that the gray and white kitten had gotten the string holding the toy wrapped around her hind leg.  I put the camera down and went to help her.  She tried to dart away as I got up but couldn’t get far!  I picked her up and whoa! She was incredibly feisty for being so tiny…so feisty that I had a hard time getting the string off.  And she was screaming in absolute distress!

While I was desperately trying to untangle the string,  I noticed in my peripheral vision that Sweetie Pie and Magic were coming for me…one from one direction and one from another. They were making feral cat cries and, I want to tell you, they were going to save that kitten!  I was wearing shorts and was envisioning shredded legs very shortly! I was truly scared.  Thankfully, I was finally able to disengage the kitten from her snare and put her down. She bee-lined away faster than the speed of light and with her freedom, the moms stopped their pursuit of me. That could have all been really, really bad…..

I felt horrible afterward.  I was upset that the moms felt betrayed and ruined their safe haven.  I was sure they would take the babies away after that. Bob said no way they were going to leave the food.  He was right.  All were all there the next morning.

That was the good thing.  The bad thing was the lesson I had learned: getting the moms to the vet is not going to be an easy task.

All present and accounted for.

By the by, I did fix that mouse toy, taking up the slack in the string so it could only be a batting toy.  I also found another toy I’d bought a long time ago – an octopus.  I hung it with rubber bands so it is a bouncing toy that just touches the ground. Bob added accents of cat nip to that one, as well!
